Problem Description

Eye-tracking technology enables researchers to follow the participants’ eye movements during an experiment and analyze various human variables, such as participants’ current eye fixation on the screen as well as their cognitive load. Due to the relative high investment in this technology the usage in experiments on a broad scale is done only scarcely. The recent emerge of low-cost eye-trackers promise to be an inexpensive solution for large-scale adoption and use in experiments (e.g. https://theeyetribe.com/). However, these eye-tracker lack sophisticated software packages for the analysis of the gathered data.

Goal of the Thesis

The thesis pursues three goals: First, existing research on eye-tracker usage in experiments as well as features and possibilities of existing low-cost eye-tracker technology and it’s provided application programming interface (API) should be analyzed and synthesized. Second, leveraging an existing low-cost eye-tracker with its API an analytics software package shall be developed enabling researchers to leverage low-cost eye-trackers in their experiments. Third, the developed analytics software package shall be evaluated by conducting a laboratory experiment using available low-cost-tracking technology.
