Special Issue:

Research is a collaborative endeavor – and this is no different with design science research (DSR), which develops and builds upon design knowledge. More recently, the potential of DSR to contribute to the solution of real-world problems has been pointed out more often. However, while in the past, most studies reported on single DSR projects, future work needs to pay attention to knowledge accumulation and evolution across multiple projects.

In this regard, two existing main challenges are the focus of this special issue:

1. As it is difficult to assess the re-use potential of design solutions to different yet related problems, this special issue seeks contributions, which demonstrate that DSR can systematically support re-use and how ‘related’ design problems (and solutions) can be identified.

2. Furthermore, it is often difficult to scope and document DSR comprehensively because relevant real-life problems and solutions are highly complex. To systematically advance our understanding of the design of information systems, this special issue seeks contributions, which demonstrate that design science knowledge can be accumulated across different sub-projects and/or researchers.

It, therefore, invites studies that apply the DSR paradigm (also referred to as Design Research studies, see Winter 2008), and that serve as exemplars to demonstrate challenges and solutions for knowledge aggregation and evolution in DSR.

Submission deadline for full papers is November 30th, 2017. The participation at an offered paper development workshop in May/June 2018 is voluntary.
