Problem Description
Text-based conversational agents, commonly referred to as chatbots, have received a lot of attention in recent years. They are designed to interact with humans using natural language and are increasingly used on messaging platforms and websites (Dale 2016; Følstad and Brandtzæg 2017). Across all industries, companies have implemented chatbots to support users in finding relevant information about products and services as well as carrying out basic tasks (e.g., book flights).
While there are many chatbots out there, an established method of how to design a chatbot is still missing. More specifically, there is a lack of understanding of the different phases, activities, tasks, and deliverables involved in the chatbot design process.
Goal of the Thesis
The main goal of this thesis is to develop a method for chatbot design. The method should be developed based on (1) a literature review of existing methods or approaches to develop chatbots and (2) expert interviews with chatbots developers, product managers, etc. We are in contact with several experts and will establish the contact between you and them.
Skills Required
- Interest in human-computer interaction, chatbots and conversational agents
- Interest in conducting interviews with experts from various organizations (e.g., startups, software manufacturers, consultancies, research labs, …)
- Very good communication and time management skills
- Good English and German skills
